When his conservative father dies, Chandra—a former Maoist rebel commander—returns to his remote Himalayan village after years away, only to find the country’s unresolved war wounds waiting at his doorstep. He is immediately forced to face his estranged brother, Suraj, who fought for the royalist side during the decade-long civil war, as well as his ex-wife, Durga, who desperately needs an official father’s signature to secure citizenship documents for her young daughter. The immediate challenge, however, is a rigid tradition: village custom dictates that only adult males can carry the father's heavy corpse down a steep mountain trail to the river for cremation. When a bitter ideological argument breaks out on the path, Suraj storms off in a rage, leaving Chandra without enough men to handle the stretcher. Bound by patriarchal taboos that forbid women from touching the body and hindered by a village drained of young men due to war and migration, Chandra spends days in an increasingly absurd search for help—appealing to local police, former guerillas, and neighboring villagers. As the body sits decomposing on the hillside, the adults remain hopelessly locked in political grudges, caste prejudices, and red tape, leaving the village's children to step up and forge their own path toward reconciliation.
